KEVHONEY SCARLETT IS QUEEN GLOBAL: The First French Trans Woman to Win an International Pageant

Miss Trans Global 2024, a trailblazer in the realm of beauty pageants, opens up about her remarkable journey. From facing adversity in her childhood to breaking barriers as the first French transgender woman to win the prestigious title, her story is one of resilience, empowerment, and a relentless pursuit of equality.

In this exclusive interview, she shares her experiences, inspirations, and the message she hopes to convey to the world.

A Month as Reigning Queen:
A month has passed since you were crowned Miss Trans Global. Has the reality of your victory fully sunk in, and how are you settling into your new role?

“Honestly, I still can’t believe I’ve not only won an international crown but also made history as the first French transgender woman and the first Afro-European to do so. Whatever happens, I realise that I’ll have to work even harder to fulfil the duties I began before winning this title.”

The First Call:
Who was the first person you contacted after being crowned, and what was their reaction?

Contacting Mum: "The first person I called was my mum, the cornerstone of my life, and guess what? She didn't believe me at first! She said she'd only trust it when she saw the pictures and videos from the coronation. But in the end, she told me she was proud but a bit worried about people's reactions, and warned me to be prepared for the hate I might face."

A Childhood Retrospective:
Can you share a bit about your childhood? What were those early years like for you?

Challenging Childhood: "My childhood was... well, quite a journey. My mum has a disability, which has led to a lot of challenges. From a young age, I've had to help look after her, but there were times when her healthcare meant I was separated from her. It's tough being four and not having your mum around, but I learned a lot about the value of life from those experiences. I've also been lucky to have a great support system, especially when I faced discrimination and racism in school. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who's stood by me, no matter what."

The Pageant Journey:
How has your background shaped your pageant journey, and what lessons have you learned along the way?

Undercover Reporter: "My pageant journey began as an undercover reporter in 2019. Back then, pageantry, even for cis and trans women, was a very different world. After getting involved, I realised how important representation and visibility are in our society. Too often, people are overlooked or judged based on outdated pageant standards. So, I decided to break the mould. I wanted to be myself, to advocate for what I believe in, and to put substance before superficial beauty."

Developing Signature Style:
Your distinct pin-up style is iconic. How did you develop your signature look, and what inspires your fashion choices?

Developing Signature Style: "My pin-up style evolved naturally through time, at first as a style chameleon. I'm inspired by the glamour and elegance of old golden Hollywood era, particularly the iconic figures like Billie Holiday and Marilyn Monroe. I enjoy experimenting with different looks and finding ways to express my personality through fashion, which inspires my alter ego, Barbie Dark Queen."
Empowering Others: "I believe that fashion can be a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment. I hope to inspire others to embrace their unique style and feel confident in their own skin."

A Voice for Change:
You're known for your involvement in social justice causes and community activism. What drives you to advocate for our marginalised community, and how do you balance your pageant duties with your commitment to these issues?

Driving Force: "Competing in various beauty competitions pushed me out of my comfort zone. I've learned a lot from my sisters' experiences, as well as the racism that my family has faced. I've also been doing advocacy work, such as running educational programs and meeting with community groups to raise awareness about these issues.

I've also learned that everyone's struggles are valid, and that many people are afraid because they simply don't have enough information. Fighting for our rights is ultimately fighting for everyone's rights, so we must never give up. I believe in a future of equality, just like Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of. It's important to use all the tools at our disposal, and to find a balance between advocacy and beauty. It's about using them at the right time."

Inspirational Figures:
Who are your personal inspirations, and how have they influenced your life and career?

Influential People: "My first inspirations are the women in my family. Despite facing racism, misogyny, and countless other challenges, they always stood up for themselves and our family. I've discovered many different faces of strength in my life.Their resilience and strength in the face of adversity have taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and courage.
I've also drawn inspiration from historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Simone de Beauvoir, and Marsha P. Johnson, who all believed in themselves, better future, and fought tirelessly for equality and justice. They have inspired me to become the leader I want to be for others."

Empowering Others:
How do you hope to use your Miss Trans Global title to empower and uplift other transgender women?

Message to Transgender People: "To all my transgender sisters, brothers, and nonbinary siblings, I want to say this: 'Be yourself.' Don't try to be someone else for acceptance, don't conform to what society expects of you, and don't let anyone tell you you're not valid. Just as you deserve respect, you also deserve to give it. Even if others don't want to accept you, remember you're alive and should make the most of this life. Love yourself, your loved ones, and help others. This is what I've learned, and this is what I want to leave as my legacy as Miss Trans Global 2024."

The Marianne Honour:
Recently, you were bestowed with the honour of being named Marianne. How did this come about, and what does this recognition mean to you?

Significance of the Recognition: "It's been an incredible experience to embody this iconic figure, especially in a time when representation is so important. With recent elections, the Olympics opening ceremony, and other events, France has been deeply divided. One question that came up frequently was 'What does it mean to be French today?'
Two cis women, Sarah Py Photographie and Océane Paris, approached me arguing that, even if I didn't realize it, I represented the essence of Marianne. They saw me as a free woman who uses her tools to make a positive impact on the world.
We shot the project, presented it to the community, institutions, and others, and to my surprise, I was chosen to give the opening speech at Paris Pride as Marianne. This is just the beginning of a fascinating journey."

Favourite makeup brand:
What makeup products do you like to use?

''My makeup routine can be quite elaborate because I love experimenting with new looks and products. Recently, one of my favourites is the brand "Pure by Valerie" – a non-gendered brand committed to fighting transphobia. Their blush is something I wear daily.
When I stick to a more classic routine, I usually use a primer, a hydrating foundation, concealer, contour stick, blush, mascara, false eyelashes, and either a moisturising balm or gloss. And voilà! I become the "cherry on top" of my own creation.''

Skincare regimen:
What is your skincare routine?

''For skincare, I’ve embraced the concept of "Korean or Japanese layering." Essentially, I cleanse and hydrate my skin every day. To break it down: I start by removing my makeup with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a natural soap. I then use a reusable makeup remover towel to wipe everything off. After that, I apply a toner to get rid of any last impurities, finishing with a serum and a cream suited to my skin type.
My little secret? I never use the same cream for both day and night, and I regularly switch up my routine so that my skin doesn’t get too used to one active ingredient. The real trick is to keep nourishing your skin – that’s the key to glowing makeup.''

A Message to Our Readers:
What inspiring message would you like to share with our readers about resilience, self-acceptance, and the power of representation?

Resilience, Self-Acceptance, and Representation: "Life is full of experiences. Some are thoughtful, some are joyful. But it's what we learn from them and how we apply that knowledge that truly defines us. I'm still on a journey of self-discovery, learning to love myself and understand who I am. One thing I've realised is that focusing on personal growth is essential for helping others. When I'm confident in myself, people's negativity can't hurt me, and I'm better equipped to support others, even those who may have caused me harm.

Understanding ourselves and the world around us is key to building a better future. Let's work together, across generations, to create a more equitable and inclusive society."

As Miss Trans Global 2024 concludes her interview, her message is clear: “Be yourself, love yourself, and help others.” Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, self-acceptance, and the unwavering pursuit of equality. As she continues to inspire and empower individuals worldwide, her legacy will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on generations to come.
